Movie Minute: Ash’s Chainsaw Hand

In honor of one of the coolest items to ever exist and also be used as a weapon in The Cabin in the Woods, I would like to take the time to highlight the king of all horror weaponry…

Ash’s Chainsaw Hand!

Hail to the King, baby.

In The Evil Dead trilogy, Ash’s Chainsaw Hand is a brutal and deadly force used to fend off reanimated friends and ghoulish Deadites.

Where can I see it? The chainsaw makes a brief cameo in The Evil Dead but does not come to realize its full potential until The Evil Dead II: Dead by Dawn and then is once again front and center in Army of Darkness.

But, why is it in place of his hand? In ED II, Ash’s hand becomes possessed by a Kandarian spirit. With little to no option, Ash lops off his right hand and then custom fits the chainsaw to replace his lost appendage.

Of course I own a shirt with this printed on it.

What good is having a chainsaw for a hand instead of, you know, a hand? Well, you have two hands for a reason. When facing down armies of Deadites and reanimated corpses, a prosthetic hand has range limitations so Ash just eliminates that problem. Always ready and at his side, his Chainsaw Hand has helped save the lives of countless townsfolk and beautiful maidens.

What about non-point blank options? See Exhibit B: The Boomstick.

This... is my Boomstick!

Ash and The Evil Dead are the reasons this blog has the title it does. If you haven’t been acquainted with this series, check it out and maybe you’ll go out and get your own zombie-killing Chainsaw Hand.

Watch this video to see first hand where the Groovy comes from (for some reason the embedding is disabled on all of the Evil Dead videos so just click on “watch it on Youtube”… trust me, it’s worth it to see where the Groove originates).
